Tools for Non-Formal In-service Providers was initially developed in 1995 in response to a specific need for training non-formal educators. Most of the teacher training in environmental education continues to be offered by non-formal educators, the majority of whom have never taken any coursework in educational philosophy or methods. The Tools training provides non -formal educators a “crash course” on the background, culture, language, and priorities of formal education. It offers suggestions on how to maximize contacts with classroom teachers, particularly when offering teacher training, thus enabling them to gain the cooperation and credibility that they deserve.

The Tools workshop helps the non-formal educator:
  • Acquire information and techniques that will strengthen teacher training workshops;
  • Bridge the gap between formal and non-formal educators;
  • Develop a deeper insight into the teaching profession;
  • Gain an overview of pedagogy and its value in non-formal settings;
  • Understand alternative assessment and how teachers use it;
  • Examine current developments and resources in the field of environmental education;
  • Learn about teacher certification, including how to become an approved provider.
